The historic Tsar Barracks, which has been adapted for our hotel, is a unique monument in Poland. The laying of the cornerstone for their construction was celebrated in 1898. Not long after, the 4th Lejb-Dragoński Pskov Regiment of the Empress Maria Fedorovna established itself there. Tsarist authorities decided to form a strong garrison in Suwałki after the fall of the January Uprising. At that time, a building project of four barracks complexes located along main roads was created. As a result, Suwałki became known as a military town.
Until World War I, the barracks were used by sub-units of the Russian army. In 1915-1919, they were occupied by German troops. After regaining independence, the barracks housed the 2nd Grochów Uhlan Regiment named after General Józef Dwernicki, and in the interwar period Suwałki became one of the largest garrisons. After 1945, the barracks complex in Pułaski Street was turned over to the People's Army of Poland. The military unit used it until March 1990.
In the interwar period, the uhlans were an integral part of Suwałki. They actively participated in the life of the city, giving it a unique atmosphere. Military parades and equestrian competitions took place here. The Regiment's festivals were a great event. Today we recall those memories. Every year in June, Suwałki hosts a Cavalry Picnic, which attracts enthusiasts from all over Poland. The Historical Reconstruction Group "Garnizon Suwałki" operates in the city.
Remembering the rich traditions of the object, we have connected with the Grochów Uhlan Regiment Association, which is able to provide 20 uhlans in full uniform. We plan to organize cyclic events referring to the history of the place, where Hotel Loft 1898 is located now. We would like to bring back the revelrous uhlan balls in Suwalki and draw on the tradition of regimental holidays by organizing, among others, equestrian competitions and cavalryman competitions.
It will be our great pleasure to host all history lovers.
